Noble, Joseph Whittlesey (1887-1927)

HONG KONG 1887. Private practitioner 1887-27, named partner, Poate and Noble 1887. Provided free dental service at the Alice Memorial Hospital. HKCMC, member of the Court, involved in realizing the plan to incorporate the college into HKU; lecturer in Dental Surgery 1896-1912. Dental Board 1914 [1]. Registered dental surgeon 1914-27, one of the first eight dentists registered with the government following the regulation of the practice of dentistry on May 7, 1914 [2]. Bought controlling interest of the Hong Kong Telegraph from Robert Ho-tung, became its publisher 1916.

[Lockhead was one of the first nine doctors who registered as medical practitioners in Hong Kong immediately following the enactment of the "Medical Registration Ordinance, 1884" that required all doctors to be licensed before they could treat patients for monetary reward. The nine were: William Stanley Adams, Philip Bernard Chenery Ayres, Johann Gerhard Heinrich Gerlach, Antonio Simplieio Gomes, William M. Hartigan, John H. Lockhead, Patrick Manson, James Stockwell, and Richard Young.]
